What Defines a Reliable Mobile Service in Japan?

When signing up for a mobile plan in Japan, many foreigners find themselves anxious about the language barrier, complex pricing structures, and the level of support available after signing a contract. Surveys frequently echo the same frustrations: “I don’t understand the explanation” or “I don't know who to call when things go wrong.”

Y!mobile stands out as a mobile carrier worth considering, offering clear-cut plans and reliability that puts users at ease.
Y!mobile offers multilingual support, English-language assistance, straightforward pricing, and a proven track record in third-party evaluations, making it a popular choice for everyone from newcomers to long-term residents.
In this article, we'll explain why Y!mobile is an easy choice for foreigners, covering three key aspects: cost, support, and overseas use.

Is the information easy to understand before signing up? Is the official website available in multiple languages?

The first hurdle for many foreigners is whether or not they can understand the information before signing a contract. On Japanese-only websites, accurately grasping rates and contract terms can be difficult.
Y!mobile bridges this gap by offering information in English and Simplified Chinese, so you can verify the essentials of your plan in your own language.
While some specific pages and the application remain in Japanese, having the big picture explained upfront provides much-needed peace of mind.
Plus, with online applications offering shipping as early as the same day free of charge, it’s a highly practical choice for those who can’t make it to a physical store.

What kind of support is available after the contract, and can you get advice in English?

Support after sign-up is also an important factor when choosing a service, particularly since survey feedback often includes comments such as “I wasn’t sure what to do after signing up.”
Y!mobile offers English-language phone support, ensuring you can get help with both general questions and technical troubleshooting in English.

* Online chat support is not available in English

In addition, some official stores offer English support from bilingual staff. The ability to seek advice in person provides an extra layer of security for many international customers.

Is the network reliable? A look at Y!mobile's reputation.

While Japanese mobile carriers are renowned for their high network quality, many users still find the underlying systems hard to understand.
Y!mobile has been highly rated for its balance of simplicity and network quality, earning the No. 1 spot for overall satisfaction in the “J.D. Power 2025 Japan Customer Service Index (CSI) Study℠” (Value Carrier segment) for four consecutive years.
For those signing their first mobile contract in Japan, such third-party evaluations serve as a vital benchmark for making a confident decision.

Are the price plans simple and affordable, and how much is the monthly fee?

The complexity of mobile pricing structures is a common challenge faced by many users, not just foreigners. Y!mobile simplifies the experience by offering just three plans tailored to your data usage.

The Simple 3 plan comes in three tiers: 5GB, 30GB, and 35GB. The monthly basic fee is as follows (excluding call charges and device costs).

S: 2,780 yen (excluding tax) / 3,058 yen (including tax)
M: 3,780 yen (excluding tax) / 4,158 yen (including tax)
L: 4,780 yen (excluding tax) / 5,258 yen (including tax)

Discounts are available if certain conditions are met. For example, by using a PayPay Card Gold for payment (*1) and subscribing to SoftBank Air (*2), the M Plan is available for just 1,958 yen (tax included) per month from the following month once all discounts are applied.
* Discount breakdown (monthly basic fee 4,158 yen - (PayPay Card Gold discount 550 yen +Home Bundle Discount Hikari Set (A)1,650 yen), all tax included)
* Call charges and device fees are separate. Family discounts and similar offers cannot be combined.
* 1 PayPay Card Gold: annual fee of 11,000 yen (tax included) required
* 2 SoftBank Air subscription example: 5,368 yen/month (tax included) (excluding device fees)
With 30GB of data included, the cost works out to approximately 65 yen per GB, allowing users to enjoy high data capacity for under 2,000 yen per month.

For those who make a lot of calls, a calling option “Daretodemo Teigaku+" is available for 880 yen/month including tax. For the S/M plans, unlimited domestic calls of up to 10 minutes are available upon application and enrollment, while the L plan includes this feature automatically with no sign-up required.

* Some calls are not eligible.

【Unlimited domestic calls up to 10 minutes / Daretodemo Teigaku+】
  • * Domestic calls exceeding 10 minutes incur a separate charge of 22 yen per 30 seconds for the extra time.
  • * If you subscribe to or cancel this option mid-month, the monthly fee will not be prorated.
  • * If you apply to subscribe to (unless done at the time of a new contract) or cancel this option mid-month, the change will take effect starting the following month.
  • * If you change to a plan that is not eligible for this option, the option will be automatically canceled.
  • * Y!mobile may disconnect calls that are determined to be excessively long in duration.
  • * Should Y!mobile determine that an improper call has been placed, the service may be canceled or the calls in question may be suspended as of a date specified by Y!mobile.

Can you use the service overseas, and what happens during business trips or temporary trips home?

Starting in summer 2026, Simple 3 (S/M/L) plans are scheduled to provide a service that allows up to 2GB of data per month at no extra charge in countries covered by the Kaigai Anshin Teigaku (Fixed Rate Country L). To use this service, you must subscribe to the International Roaming Service and complete an application. Voice calls, SMS, and international SMS are charged separately.
Until this service begins, you can use the Kaigai Anshin Teigaku (Fixed Rate Country L) [3GB/24 hours] in target countries for up to seven days per month at no extra charge.
* The start date and content of the service may be subject to change.

Can I use a smartphone purchased overseas?

If a smartphone purchased overseas meets all the required conditions including Japan’s Technical Conformity (Giteki) certification, compatibility with supported frequency bands, and having its SIM lock removed if necessary, it may be usable if you simply swap out the SIM or eSIM.
Please note, however, that 5G is limited to certain areas, and compatibility with all overseas devices is not guaranteed.

Summary: Is Y!mobile a practical choice for foreigners?

The anxieties around signing up for a mobile contract in Japan can be summed up in two words: confusion and the difficulty of getting help.
By offering multilingual support, English customer service, straightforward pricing, and a strong track record in third-party evaluations, Y!mobile is one mobile service that foreigners living in Japan can feel confident choosing.
